Wondering about ..................

Afternoon All,
I've been reading through the threads this afternoon and one has really caught my imagination. The thread I'm referring to is Demitris' Albatros W4 thread. It has me wondering about another conversion project.

I'm thinking of converting a Roden D.II to a W.4.The trouble is I'm not sure exactly what I'd need to do other than remove the tail skid structure and scatch build the floats,as the basic fuselage appears the same to my eyes. What other differences are there?I should point out that as of yet I haven't a single drawings of the W.4 to really compare to the D.II.Luckily I do have many drawings for the other Albatros types though.

I would appreciate any information you may have on these two types. Also any ideas you have to help me pull this off. Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Gregory Jouette

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL

The gap between the wings is larger so you'd have to redo all the struts. Also the horizontal empennage was a different shape. It was shorter in chord and longer in span looking like an oval with its long axis perpendicular to the fuselage. Late W.4s had ailerons on all 4 wings (connected by struts) plus the Teeves & Braun radiator in the upper centre section. A good reference for the shapes is the Eduard/Gavia kit as seen here.

Then you'd need to build the floats but of course you know that already

I think it would look fantastic.

Jessie,
Thanks for the information, much appreciated.Doesn't sound too difficult of a conversion at all really.Especially if comparing the work needed for DR.I to E.V conversion currently underway. The link you posted in reference is an excellent thread too,in fact the idea of the conversion occurred to me while reading Demitris W 4 thread.

Now I need to start gathering more information on the W4 itself.Looks like it's time to dig through those old Windsock's again. The search is on because this one is going to happen.

Regards,
Gregory Jouette

I love the fragile spindly look of the W.4 as compared to the purposeful almost brutal (but still very aesthetically pleasing) appearance of the D.1 - D.V series.

A W-4 in 32 scale , that's to cool !

As to what Jessie has said the only thing I can add off memory is the upper and lower wing chord is also longer in lenght and the top wing cut out is a different shape . If you need info just let me know and will see what I can do . Was going to post the drawings which are in the mini datafile , but I don't think Ray would be to happy about that .

I've just measured my Eduard kits and got the following:

D.11 (all measurements at the widest points)
Upper wing
Span 175 mm
Chord 43 mm
Lower wing
Span 168 mm
Chord 35 mm

W.4 (all measurements at the widest points)
Upper wing
Span 200 mm
Chord 40 mm
Lower wing
Span 192 mm
Chord 37 mm

Converting this to 1/32 the measurements should be as follows:
D.11 (all measurements at the widest points)
Upper wing
Span 262.5 mm
Chord 55.5 mm
Lower wing
Span 252 mm
Chord 51 mm

W.4 (all measurements at the widest points)
Upper wing
Span 300 mm
Chord 60 mm
Lower wing
Span 288 mm
Chord 55.5 mm

The upper wing cutout is a more nearly semi-circular shape which extends to the same distance from the leading edge as that of the D.11 so it appears much narrower and deeper than on the D.11

Gregory as the other people already said, the fuselage is practicaly the same but all the flying surfasses are diferent.
Just to have an idea here are Eduards W4 wings and tail upon the drawings of DII in 1/48. From Windsock Datafile n 100 Albatros DI and DII.

Well i hope those drawings in satch contition doesnt have any coryright problem but if they do the administrators just tell me and i will remove them.
