Jasta i.d.

Bit of a needle in a haystack , but worth a try to get an i.d. on the Jasta or even pilot in the below .
Pilot combat report lists on the 22/05/18 entering combat with Alb DV's 2 miles SE of Arras ..near Hancourt at 1030 . Pilot lists seeing a DV with markings on the top wing . Markings were - a circle , with a cross inside the circle . Pilot lists colours as white, black and brown , but I am unsure if that is the colours of the marking ...or aircraft ?.
Any idea's who this was or what Jasta ?

I have the following claims listed for No 22 Squadron RAF on 22 May 1918, all timed at 10:30 (British time):

2nd Lt S H Wallage + Lt A P Stoyle, an Albatros scout crashed and another out of control in the vicinty of Hancourt

Lt S F H Thompson + Sgt R M Fletcher, an Albatros scout crashed at Hancourt

Capt W J Mostyn + Sgt J H Jones, an Albatros scout out of control south-east of Arras

Lt E C Bromley + Lt J H Umney, a scout out of control south-east of Arras

Capt A C Atkey + Lt C G Gass, an Albatros scout "destroyed" south-east of Arras

I don't have a note of any particular markings on the German machines. So far I've not been able to match any German losses with these claims with any certainty.

Thanks for the reply Graeme
It was Mostyn , Jones OOC claim which they saw this marking on . I also couldn't find any losses , but thought it would be interesting to know who they were in combat that day . I could sort of nail it down to several Jasta's I guess from my reference books , but was hoping ( still hoping ? ) that someone more informed than me could place this Jasta .
thanks again .

Jastas with markings of black and brown south of Arras. Hmmm. May 5, 1918. D.V or more probably Alb. D.Va types. I'll have a look.

My Gallery
Hancourt, 2 miles S.E. of Arras?

Hi Fill:
This sounds like an interesting puzzle. Hancourt, 2 miles S.E.of Arras. I cannot find a Hancourt in that area, however a little further to the S.E., there is Haucourt. What we need to know is the order of battle for the Armee, which is the 17.Armee. The fighter units in the 17.Armee on 22 May 1918, was Gruja 8b with Jasta 23b, Jasta 32b, Jasta 35b and Jasta 59.
The markings and colors were:
Jasta 23b. black and white band around the rear fuselage and empennage. Alb.D.Va, and Pfalz D.IIIa, no engagements or losses.
Jasta 32b. black empennage. Alb.D.Va, Pfalz D.IIIa. No engagements no losses.
Jasta 35b. white Chevron on the upper wing, black chevron under the lower wing, different colored fuselage bands. Alb.D.V, Pfalz D.IIIa and Rol.D.VIa, no engagements and no losses.
Jasta 59, various markings. Alb.D.Va, Fok.DR.I and Rol.D.VIa, no losses or engagements.
From my incomplete records, there does not seem to be any engagements on 22 May 18. That does not mean that there were not any battles.
It would appear that the most likely Jasta was Jasta 59, the information is the least with Jasta 59.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Thank you for your reply Mr Abbott.
Thanks also for taking the trouble to look up that info and the excellent summary you gave . It seems it's still a bit of a mystery . I will while away a few hours following the leads you gave ( knowing full well I won't find anything if you haven't ),
Thank you again .
