Hansa-Brandenburg W18

Does anyone know what the levelspeed performance of this flying-boat at high is?one source (P.Schupita) stated it is 175km/h presumable at see level. For a 230hp engine it seems too little in my opinion.

Sea level dash speed of the Hansa Brandenburg W.18 flying boat with 150 hp Benz Bz.III engine was reported to be 160 km/h (Kroschel und Stützer, Die deutschen Militärflugzeuge 1910-1918). This book is quite reliable source of information.

Brandenburg CC is described in the same book as a bit smaller and lighter with a maximum speed of 175 km/h at sea level (again Bz.III engine).
Wing area was 26.5 sq.m (CC) vs. 34.38 sq.m (W 18).

Data from Schupita:
  • Austro-Daimler 185 P.S. and Hiero 160/200 P.S. for A12/24 (CC); 165-179 km/h.
  • Hiero 200 P.S. for A25/48 (CC); 170-179 km/h.
  • Hiero 200/230 P.S. for A50/96 (W 18); 163-175 km/h.
Wing span 9.3/8.47 m (CC) vs. 10.7/10.3 m (W 18).
All the data are quite consistent for all the flying boats. I do not expect too much speed increase with aditional power. About 10 km/h is a reasonable value. Improved take-off run, rate of climb and ceiling should be expected too.
Even a fighter aeroplane with Hiero 200/230 P.S. was able to achieve only about 190 to 200 km/h.
Regards,
Yavor
