Fokker DR1 Construction Question

DR1 Question:

Gentlemen:

I am building the Eduard Fokker DR1 and if I understand the plans correctly, then there is an open space under the machine guns in the forward area of the cockpit.

Is this true? Was the cockpit open to the floor under the guns?

Were the guns attached to the crash bar which ran under them from one side of the cockpit to the others?

The Eduard model seems to indicate this, but I am hoping someone familiar with the construction of the actual a/c can shed some light.

Any help much appreciated!

Fokker Dr.1 cockpit

Hi Joe,

I don't specifically know the answer to your question, but have you seen this photograph before? To me it looks as though it could be an open space, but I do not know, I am just speculating, based on what I can see - which isn't much - in the photo.

Cheers,

David.

Maybe this photo will help. In front of the ammunition box you will find the Ammo-belt return box then petrol and oil tank.

You can see either the petrol or oil fill cap on the left side, the right side had the other one. I believe it was a singe tank divided into two sections. In the center of the guns there was a oil gauge, you can see if behind the tube on the left gun.

Never mind the circle around the ammo-belt it was for a different subject.

Photos of V.7 wn 1788 show this area rather clearly...not a standard build but close enough.

I had always thought is was a fuel gauge between the guns not a oil gauge?

Question about Fokker DR1

Tim:

Can you tell me how to find v.7 1788 you referenced in your reply to my request for info? I admit to being a novice at getting around the Aerodrome.

Any help much appreciated!

joefrazier:

Here is an old thread that has some photos and one of the airframe of a V.7 with no guns, ammo-box or petrol tank. You will see the front gun mounts but I'm not sure on how the rear of the gun was attached.

I dont actually have the rights to post the images =(

Someone else here might be able to. Outside of the good people here, Lloyd's site might have something or specifically page 185 "Fokker Dr.I Triplane" by Paul Leaman. I'd have to look but some of the Osprey books might as well. Imries book doesn't have it.

good luck and welcome to the drome!

Lloyd,
Thanks, that was a nice thread, some photos I've never seen before

I think Leamans book has exactly what Joe is looking for. Do you have the photos at your site?

Info on Forward cockpit area of the Dr1

Gentlemen:

Thank you so much for your interest and help! I would be very happy to find some pix if they are available.

I really am a WWI novice, but I think the Aerodrome is going to be a great place to come frequently.

All the best,

Joe
