Searching for 1/72 scale WWI Turkish, Japanese, Portuguese, Bulgarian&Romanian Decals
There you have it -
- Anyone know if they are made? I got some Serbian stuff from Blue Rider, but that's it - google's not much help here - and the US 1st Aero Squadron in the Mexican Punitive Expedition is desirable too - as well as any markings from Pancho Villa's handful of mercenary fliers, or the Zapatistas, et al... I'm not good at hand painting markings, but I guess I'll have to if there's nothing out there from these conflicts - also any markings from either combatants in Palestine, Iraq, Thessalonika, Tsingtao, East or West Africa, etc...
Thanks.

Hi vikingcelt,
This thread might get some more attention if you contact one of the moderators, Ross_Moorehouse or AAC Cadet Leader, and ask them to move it to the model forum.
Your best option for some of these may be to buy decal paper, and print your own. If you do so, keep the resolution high (300 pixels per inch) and do test prints on comparable but less expensive paper, because the color you see on your screen will probably not match the color that comes out of your printer.

Some of this is fairly simple to improvise, Sir.
Turkish markings were white edged black squares. You can cut out a square of white decal film, and a slightly smaller square of black decal film, and apply them in sequence.
The Japanese used the Hinomaru red disc, without any white edging, and so WWII decal sets of appropriate size would do.
Bulgarians used the Cross Pate on white field, like the Germans.
Romanian roundels were red, yellow, blue (outside in order): Spanish Nationalist or Belgian roundels would not be hard to modify.
Portuguese I have no idea, in the WWI time period.

Thank you very much Sirs for your responses, I appreciate it immensely!
I will follow up and ask to place this thread in the modeling section, thanks.
I was aware of a self-made decal process, but didn't know what it entailed. I thought one needed to buy some kind of decal program or something - I'm not very good with computer stuff, etc... Q: Where would one get the decal paper for the printer; and can I use the regular ink I already have in my printer, and how can I create images for the decals, get them to the right scale, etc...?
What is an "Hinomaru" disc - with or without the sunbeams coming out? I actually found a site showing a color plate side view of a Nieuport IV with a Japanese rising sun on the tail rudder, white background, but with no other markings on the wings or fuselage.
Also, what is a "cross pate"? Do you mean a German Black Maltese Cross on a white background? I also found out on the same site they put their flag's colors on the tail rudder from top to bottom; white, green, and red, if I'm correct.
And Romanian Markings - was the red-yellow-blue order starting from the outer ring working in, or from the center disc working out?
I also discovered on the same site, the Portuguese also displayed their flag, red and green with the gold insignia in the center, on the tail rudder as well, but haven't seen any other markings as yet.
I haven't seen any photos of Lieutenant Gunther Pluschow's Etrich-Rumpler Taube, of Tsingtao fame, which shows any markings; I suspect his machine may have donned the large Black Maltese crosses on the wings, on the plane's natural unpainted doped fabric, as was the customary style for the German Taubes in the beginning of the war - but have no evidence to back it up.
Thanks gents.

Vikingcelt,
I have not used any decal paper, so I can not recommend any brand. A Google search for decal paper brought these results. Paper is available for both injets and lasers.

Red on the outside, blue in the center. on the fin, red on the trailing edge. best way to remember, the romanians fot mostly french planes, so they had only to paint over the white areas with yellow!
useful reference can be found if you search "national markings" on this forum by eric goedkoop(closed thread)

Turkish markings
Americal Gryphon did an A4 sized sheet of Turkish markings (black square edged in white) before they closed. I have the sheet. If you let me know the number and sizes you are need I would be happy to send you them.
Regards
James

thanks mr jamo!
Mr Jamo:
Thanks for any help, I'm building a few fighter sized planes for the Turks in 1/72 scale, like Fokker Eindeckers and DVII's, and a Bleriot XI, for starters - gee, thanks!
