Excellent book... I read it last fall. If you are looking for a detailed first hand account this is a good one.

The book starts with his life in the american west at the turn of the century. It is here, as a cowboy, that he learned the skills that later served him well... first as a Canadian Truck driver (though he'd never driven a truck in his life), then as an observer, then later as a fighter pilot.

This is very much a story of a man who took opportunity as it came... His young life was very much driven by being in the right place at the right time.

It also provides interesting insight into the Force Development world (which is what I do for a day job). His experience transitioning into the U.S. Army Air Service once the US joined the war is heartbreaking.

You will enjoy it very much.

good read

I agree a very good first person account of a man's life. This will raise your respect for the FE2b and Observers in general. MH

This is an excellent book! It provides a very readable account of what life was like in a representative RFC two-seater squadron, but also gives a snapshot in time of what life was like in prewar and immediate postwar America. It is written in a style that reminds one of listening to an old veteran, sitting on his front porch, rambling on about his recollections of the war. I rank this book among my all-time top ten!
