A slightly different take on the aviation art
Recently I was presented with the opportunity to have some of my value studies engraved on clear acrylic. Curious to see how they would turn out, I tried a few. I tested several designs, and lo and behold, they actually turned out pretty cool!
Here are a couple of examples - the main grouping of Wolff's Requiem and the pencil study for my upcoming RE8 piece. I'm thinking of offering them up for sale on my site at a cost of about $38, but I wanted to see what folks think of them first. In addition to the two images shown here, I can also offer any of the following images engraved on clear acrylic:
Russell Smith Studios - SPAD XIII Thaw
Russell Smith Studios - Rumpler CIV
Russell Smith Studios - SPAD XIII Thaw
Russell Smith Studios - Fokker Dr1 Jasta 27
My thought is that they would make cool little displays for a desk, mantle or coffee/end table. They measure 6" x 6", plus a 3/4" base attached at the bottom.

Pretty Cool!
I have seen those acrylic cubes in the mall where people can get there pictures and so forth engraved inside somehow and there is a 3d effect to the whole thing.
I like it but I guess I am more of traditional type person; I would rather have one of your pencil studies/sketches framed and hanging on a wall. Something makes those look more like an Award for some reason or another. Maybe it's because every time I walk into an office there is an award on the counter made out of acrylic? I do not know.
Neat concept though, it is still your art work...just on another medium. So they look good no matter what.

Thanks Stephen. I suspect that may end up being the general consensus, but, of course, it never hurts to ask.

Hi Russell. When I compare your two artworks on this medium I would only consider buying the Wolffs Requiem one because it fills more space. The RE8 has too much empty surface....maybe a side view of a plane is not so ideal in this case. Or add some clouds otherwise i like it.

Mate,
They look pretty cool!
I have also seen them in malls as well and on line, and they seem to sell pretty well.
Can we purchase those that are presented or can we offer suggestions to one's we would like to purchase from your gallery of art works?

Both. I've got additional ones available, including all of those listed in the links above. The b/w images are much easier to do than the paintings, simply because of the lack of background. However, if you have something else in mind shoot me a PM and I'll see if its feasible.
they're not up for sale on my site yet, but I should have them up in another week or so.

From my limited knowledge these look to be laser etched? and if I'm not mistaken it was done by a YAG laser.
Finally high quality aviation acrylic etched artwork. Way cool...I have looked for years for something like this. By the way that piece that I gave you was laser cut and the lines on it (laser etching) are also done with the CO2 laser.
Now all I have to do is find a job

That's exactly right, Lloyd (at least about the laser - can't say about YAG laser. that's over my head).
You'll be glad to know that the J27 tripe turned out REALLY good on this acrylic.
Good luck with the job hunt!

Yes, indeed, I liked your pencil study on that plane and with the markings on the side of the fuselage makes this a really good looking Dr.I.

Russell; These acrylics look really sharp. Cool idea. As I'm about out of wall print space, these can sit around and add an extra dimension while taking hardly any space. Whats wrong with classy awards sitting around? Nothing, I like the fact that they are shiny and diamond-like. I'll look on your site in a week or so to get the Wolf's Requiem one for starters. By the way, my wife really digs these crystal-like laser decor pieces in anything. Theres a way to slip one past and gain an ally at home?? FM
