Voss - Painting. Looking for....

A long time ago in a galaxy far away... Oh wait that's another story.

Actually quite a ways back I subcribed to a magazine ( perhaps "Historic Aviation" or an early issue of " Air and Space".. not sure now, but here was this piece of art as the centerspread. Unfortunatley ruined for framing by the staples, etc.

One of the most unusual orientations of a WW1 or any other aviation art I've ever seen. Aspect was directly above the cockpit of Voss' F1 103/17 in the final flight. He is I think looking a bit up as if we ( the viewer) has just flown overhead. You can see I recall some aspects of his opponets below. The view is so close up it doen't even cover the whole planform of the plane.

Anyone have this or has seen it? I'd love to find one or at least get a nice jpg of it with a good scan rate. I'm almost certain it was never made into a poster or limited edition.

In some ways I think it reminded me a bit of something by Jim Dietz where the personality of the human was as important ( or moreso ) than the plane.

Thanks... Still looking

Thanks LL, I've been on your terrific site several times in the past also. I still didn't see it unless you've got it hidden away. I looked thru all the featureds ( is that a word)

THis particulat art had an almost photorealstic quality about it and as I said before was centered "directly" over the cockpit looking straight down.

If I missed something on your site that your think is it point i out specifically ( I'm naht a smat man Ginny) < A Gumpism for uneducated

Mate,
How about this pic: ‘The Sun Sets On Werner Voss’ by Wilson Hurley. I think this is the picture you are talking about.

Found!... Sort of...

Well yes, it indeed is " The Sun sets for Werner Voss" by Wilson Hurley. In a lot of searching I was able to locate one, although it's a bit small. My chances of finding one on the aftermarket are probably pretty slim. Although you never know.

THe one I have is 164K and works out to about 792 x 792.

If anone has a better, or larger file I'd raly like to have it to use as a wallpaper and maybe print out for my own use. Feel free to contact me if yu can help.

It's somewhat sad to say Mr. Hurley passed away late last year, and was more on a lnadscape artist, with only a few ventures into WW1 aviation, but this work stands as a testament to his skill of composition.

Mate,
The painting that you have is "The Sun sets for Werner Voss" by Wilson Hurley.

Good find! When did you say the artist passed away? and who owns the rights to his paintings now, as i would like to get into contact with them via email if possible?

Hi tcrean7828:

I just did a internet search for this and Russ had posted this in thread here. You should have this one too since you took part of this thread.

I don't know this artist but maybe be Russ or Mike should know.

wilson hurley

Mr Hurley was a very talented artist, and although i never met him personally , i was able to talk to him on several occassions and he very kinldy let me have a copy of the sun sets on w. voss to use in my book.
i do not know who would now have the copyright, but i think you could contact the folks as ASAA and they could help. I would like to put a pitch in here for the ASAA( American Society of Avaition Artists):: a superb group of friendly , knowledgable, and talented folk who are quick to help when they can. I am a non-artist member, but enjoy getting their forum mag quarterly with some excellent stuff/ art , etc in it.-- i think Mike O'Neal or Russ Smith would be good contacts as they are both representative of the artists in the society and are good ambassadors for the ASAA!!
i would like to suggest any and all people who love aviation art should join and support this great group of folks who enrich are lives, hobbies via their superb talents!!!

Wilson was primarily a landscape artist, but he did many aviation/aerospace works as well. He did a few WW I paintings, but many of his experience as a FAC in Viet Nam. As superb as his WW I work is, his Viet Work is absolutely stunning no doubt as a result of his havign actually been there. If you get a chance to go the the AF Museum at Wright Patt, he donated about a dozen large works which are on permanent display.

tcrean7828 -

If Wilson did not sell the copyright - and I suspect he did not - the copyright is probably still will his estate. If you send me some contact info, either via PM or directly at njaviators@aol.com, I will forward your question/request on to his wife.
