RFC Service Record

Can anyone please help me with unit locations/names and interpret some indistict handwriting on an RFC pilot's service record?

This record starts with the person at 6 OCB Oxford in Feb 1917. What is 6OCB?

In April 1916 he is at SMA Oxford. What is SMA?

A month later at what looks like J4 RS Netheravon, It certainly states RS Netheravon which I understand is 'Reserve Squadron' but am no means certain that it is 'J4'. Any ideas?

In June 1917 he is at 'A' Squadron CVS. The 'A' could be '1'. Any ideas and what is CVS?

In July 1917 he was at 66 TS Yatesbury. Should this be 66TDS?

Many more similar queries to follow later.

Some help

Hi David -

Well, since you provided some information about one of my New Jersey boys, it is now my chance to return the favor.

6OCB - Sorry not a clue.

SMA is School of Military Aeronautics - Ground School.

TS and TDS - There is a distinction between Training Squadron and Training Depot Station though I am uncertain what that is. I'm sure one of our more literate forumites will pop with with the answer to this. Unfortunately, I only have the Nov '18 Order of Battle which has the 28th Wing, 36 & 37th TDS at Yatesbury.

Not much help I admit, but best I can do I'm afraid.

-Mike

OCB is Officer Cadet Batallion. These were facilities to train Officers for Infantry.

6 OCB was located at Balliol College in Oxford

6 ocb

Do you know if Balliol College, Oxford was just the location or was the unit particularly for Balliol men? The person in question was a 28 year old civil engineer wqorking on the railways. Oral family history tells that he went to Oxford but they have no record of him.

RFC Service Record

Some more RFC unit initials that I dont understand:

E.F. 29 Squadron France - what is 'E.F.' - is it 'expeditionary force'?

I.A.S.D.L. (Pool)

M.R & L.N.

16(T) Gr N.E.P. - I guess it is number 16 training group but don’t know what N.E.P. is

Can anyone help?

Not sure about these abbreviations. You may find this page here interesting:
Centre for First World War Studies

It is stated there that the College was just providing the premises during wartime. So they were no registered students with the college itself I guess.

RFC Service Record

Kilian - thank you for the very useful reference to the 'Centre for First World War Studies' web site. I would take issue with one comment made on it by Colonel Alison Hine who states with reference to OCBs that 'Officer cadets had to have served in the ranks'. The person I am interested had no previous service in the ranks. He was a civil engineer who worked on the railways and who joined the RFC directly and sent almost immediatly to 6OCB.
