Question on Pfalz Control Grip...

Greetings All,

I have a question on the control grip of the pfalz. From the pictures i have seen both the D.III and D.XII (and subvariants) actuated the throttle with the left grip. It twisted much the same as our current motorcycle grips do. My question is this ; Does anyone know which direction the throttle was twisted to increase the power? Was it counterclockwise like our current motorcycle's or was it clockwise? In addition i wonder if there was friction that allowed the throttle to stay in its current position or did it require constant pressure to maintain the setting which could lead to massive hand/wrist fatigue? If it did perhaps this could also explain some of the pilot gripes with the type...

Any info to share?

Hello UberPfalz

The control grip has to be twisted clockwise to increase the power. You can see the word AUF (open) and the arrow which shows the direction. there are two bowden control cable to the carburator. one for opening and one to close . The grip itself was axially preloaded by a compression spring. Therefore the pilot don't need massive hand forces for throttle setting

Pfalz Control Column Throttle

Here is a photo of AWM's D.XII's control column. It clearly shows the two cable ports on the hand grip mount.

I think, in general, British and German throttle movement was away from the pilot to open the throttle (clockwise), and French movement was towards the pilot (counterclockwise).
