Grainey

The only shot of 24 Sq I have is a grainy shot of John B. Lee III. Here 'tis.

I'd very much appreciate a good quality shot of Lt. Lee for my NJ project if you run into one....

24th Aero Squadron

This is from the same group picture I have. It was taken November 15, 1918 in Vavinecourt France. If I find another I'll let you know. My grandfather Lt. Lea Lesher is in the top row, second on the left wearing the officers dress hat. To his right is Spessard Holland who would later become Governor of Florida and later Senator.

Yes, this is the same picture I have. The plane is a French made Salmson 2. Interesting craft. Capt. Murray Hill stands top row center in front of the plane's prop.

Sitting

Martina -

I think Captain Hill is sitting right next to Lt. Lee's left (our right), just under the fellow standing under the prop hub.

I seem to recall seeing another shot of him standing in front of a Salmson and his face is familiar....

What do you think ?

24th Aero

Mike,

Sorry I've been away so long. I spent too much time the day of your last message researching Capt. Hill. Found no pictures but I think you're right about which guy he is in the photo. Interesting background.

As time permits I'll scan what I can, if I can, of other photos. The problem is they're in an old album which I don't want to damage. Also I will try to photograph a framed piece of airplane skin my grandfather cut from one of the planes that has the group logo. I'm sure you'd enjoy seeing it.

Here he is...

I finally found the photo of Capt. Hill I mentioned - the faces seem to match.

And yes, I would very much appreciate seeing the fabric piece. I don't think I have ever seen a 24th Aero Squadron piece before.

An Aside Question?

Hello Fellas; As a question unrelated to the topic personnel - does anyone know what the hangar markings on the top front of the Bessonneau hangar mean?? D.W. 226?? What does this stenciling relate to and mean?? My first guess would be, Denier Weight for the canvas weight?? Anybody else have a guess or information on this marking for the hangar canvas?? Denier (according to Webster) equates a unit of measure equal to .05 grams per 450 meters. I've noted this on other hangars in photos, including this photo which I have. This looks to be the standard model 20x28 meter Bessonneau hangar with camouflage paints?? Thanks for any assist with this topic, which may be mundane to some, but interesting to others. Who have you got in the NCAA Madness? Cheers; FM
