Three SE.5a Fighters flying on Armistice Day.

Here are a few shots I took yesterday.
All three aircraft are now flying actively and were due to fly to Wellington for the 90th Anniversary Armistice Day fly-past and they tried but the weather deteriorated so the aircraft turned back and over flew the Masterton war memorial.
Had a few minutes to capture the moment with a few air 2 air photos as we were sharing time with Television NZ.
The air 2 airs will have to wait for another time.

These three aircraft are just stunning and will add something very special to the Airshow scene here in little old New Zealand.

It was great to fly alongside these aircraft on the 90th Anniversary and just before we headed home Gene De Marco took me for a quick spin in the original Bristol Fighter pictured below, and that just blew my mind flying in an original.

Have a look at the link below for some other WW1 aircraft that will feature in a 2009 calendar due to be released soon.

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing the photos. Having a formation of the same aircraft really makes an impact and takes the whole replica/reproduction thing to a new level.

I have to marvel at the level of enthusiasm in NZ. I see it written up in magazines, etc but there must be a lot going on in people's sheds and hangars we don't hear about until they fly. It does lead me to question why Australia doesn't put in the same effort! Still, people like Nick and Sheppo are doing their lion share.

Cheers bro

Guys

Heres a thread on a New Zealand board showing some pics of a small airshow held at Masterton on the 15th. Just three hours long. It looks like it included 3 Se5s, 3 Triplanes, Camel, F2B, Fokker D7.

Triplane01,

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have a feel for the performance of each a/c? Are they powered the same? Do any have significant idiocyncracies?

Thanks,
Phil

I wish i could pilot an S.E.5a, it's probaly my favorite fighter plane. It looks as if they still have the Vickers on them.

Hey guys!

I was at the Remembrance Day display, and I was going to post 31 images of the Se5as for your perusal.....but I'm limited to only six!!

The display also included the Tiger Moth-based "Bianchi Pfalz" D.III of Blue Max fame, and the Rotary Nieuport XI. A fantastic, intimate display with some great flying.

Apparently the Ses all have original engines. Here's a handful of shots of the lead ship of the formation.

And one of all three, just prior to dogfighting three Dr.Is in THE best dogfight I've ever witnessed at an NZ airshow:

Seeing three Fokkers and three SE5as dogfight would be the highlight of any airshow anywhere!

Thanks for sharing the photos. It looks like you have one of those dream jobs!
