Roden DrI 1:32 von Richthofen

Hello all

Here is my recently finished Roden 1:32 Fokker Dr. I

I liked the kit very much, it was not too difficult for me, but still a challenge I think.

This wonderful forum was a great help, and I got a lot of information and inspiration.

At first I wanted to build a Fokker with the streaky camouflage, but I just could not get it to look right, so I chose to paint it as Manfred von Richthofens all red Fokker Dr I 425/17

It is actually my first model of one of MVR’s aircraft, and I am now happy to have it in my collection.

The model depicts 425/17 after the iron crosses were painted over with the “Balkenkreuze”

I don’t claim it to be 100% accurate, but I have searched a lot about 425/17 here, and in my references and tried to come as close as I could, but I am sure I missed something.

There are some issues I am not sure about:

I tried to tone the red colour a bit down, but maybe it is still a bit too bright.

I don’t know if this aircraft was delivered in red, but I chose to paint it red with no streaky green/brown shining through.

I am not sure if white squares behind the earlier iron crosses should show through the red paint, the pictures in my books do not show this, so I did not paint it.

I tried to let the earlier iron crosses show through the “Balkenkreuze” maybe it is too much. The black bars are maybe a bit too wide for the aircraft final appearance, maybe I change that some day…

I am sorry, but I have no construction photos, I am not very good with a camera, so I had too have my father to take the pictures.

Anyway, I hope you like it.

Comments are very welcome

Kind regards
Anders Kofoed Hansen

Anders,

It looks great to me. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Did you have any fit issues with the kit? Overall, how is its quality?

Regards,

Hi Anders:

I won't go into if 425/17 was delivered in red or not but I will say that there there was no standard green streaking on 425/17 so this was a good choice.

You are correct that the white field can't be seen in the photos but is there as evident in the RCMI sample. I think if you had seen the plane up close that you would have seen the outline of it.

I like how you added the production number on the side of the fuselage then painted over it. This is accurate from evidence and the fact that no plane would have been accepted without it and all it markings on the plane and that A. E/ Ferko has stated that he could see it in the original glass plate of 425/17.

I did see the imperfections in the paint on the port side just like the photo that was maybe from the seat belt hang over the side, nice touch and yes the inverted "v" smug on the starboard side is a great touch.

Over all this is the closest I have seen in a model as to the markings of 425/17. Great job!!!

Lloyd...

It looks very good. i do have two suggestions. The tires should be light grey and the propeller should be laminated wood, a light and darker colored wood.

Nicely Done May I echo the suggestions for the prop and tires. I like the way you have represented the stenciling as over painted. Crosses are done very well.

Hello

Thank you all so much for your nice comments, it is very much appreciated and means alot to me.

Thank you very much Lufbery, I liked the kit, but I had some fit issues, and I did a lot of dry-fitting. The engine would not fit into the cowling, so I cut some of each cylinder before I attached the cylinder heads. The mid wing was also a bit difficult to fit right, resulting in a big gab between the fuselage and underside of the mid wing (wing root). The one-piece wing struts was a difficult fit, so I ended up cutting these in half and mounted them separately to the mid wing.
All in all it is a very good kit, and the problems I had were maybe my own fault.

Ross, Thank you very much for your kind words.

Bob, Thank you for your encouraging and nice comments.

Lloyd, Thank you so much for your comments. Coming from you really means a lot to me. You are properly right about the white squares
Thank you.

Doug. Thank you very much. I used the Eduard Photo-etch detail set, mainly for the cockpit and the guns. I also added the inspection panel (or what it is) under the nose, and I scribed the “panel line” on the cowling.
The buckles are from Bobs Buckles, and these are really great!

Tom, Thank you very much. Thank you for your suggestion about the propeller and the tires. I have a spare propeller from another kit, so I will try to make a new one. Maybe I can carefully dust some light dust on the tires, else I have to repaint them. Thank you.

Stephen, Thank you very much for your kind words, very much appreciated.
Also thank you for the suggestion about the propeller and the tires.
