BMW IIIa aircraft engine inquiry
I though I had seen some information on the 185 hp BMW IIIa engine used on the Fokker D.VII on the Aerodrome Forum last February, but I can't seem to find them now. Any information on information sources for this engine would be greatly appreciated.

Info source
The best source I know of for that engine performance is:
"Prüfung, Wertung und Weiterentwicklung von Flugmotoren",
by Dechamps und Kutzbach, 1921
Of course it's in German. So you would need to translate it
and understand it correctly to obtain the information you are
searching for. Not many people have accomplished that feat.

BMW info
Udo,
I was looking for technical specifications for the BMW engines to get an idea of size, displacement, compression ratio and so forth to be able to compare them to the Mercedes engines. You posted the equivalent displacements of the Mercedes in comparison to the Gypsy Queen engines, 15 to 12 liters I believe. I have been able to find quite a bit of information on the Mercedes. I have the Osprey Fokker D.VII Aces books and they refer to the German pilots preference for the BMW because of better performance.
I don't think I'll be commissioning a new BMW IIIa for my project, but that may change if I buy a winning lottery ticket.

the BMW is the same engine like the Mercedes with bigger cylinders . 150mm x 180 mm 19 liters 6,5 . Mercedes 140mm ( 145 ) x 160mm 15 ( 16 ) liters 4,8 . Junkers L5 still same engine . Crankshaft problem . Mercedes is the better one . less problems .

Udo,
Thank you for the reply and information. Does anyone publish information about the BMW?

Udo,
I'm looking for technical specifications, parts, systems and cut-away drawings of the engine. A translation of the factory service manual would be ideal, but I doubt that is available. I have been able to find reports and monographs on the Mercedes engine on-line, and I have the Kelly, Cash and Funke drawings for the D.VII, as well as the McCook Field reports on the captured Fokkers with Mercedes, Liberty and Hisso engines installed. After reading the references in the Fokker Aces books I would like to learn more about the BMW for my own knowledge, but I haven't found anything through the library or on-line. If you have some information that you could scan and email I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks,
Darrel
