WIP - DML 1/48 Fokker Dr.1

Actually, this model represents several firsts for me. My first WWI aircraft, my first use of acrylics for the main paints, and my first attempt at the infamous Fokker streak.

Paints are MisterKit applied over Floquil flat white enamel. I must say that the MisterKit paints are great. The streaking is with Olive Green artist oil paint. I studied numerous photos of the real planes in my references and attempted to recreate the streak appearance. It's not perfect but I'm happy with the results. The model is to be finished in the markings of Rudolph Klimke so the rear half of the fuselage and tail plane will be overpainted with yellow.

Many thanks to members of this forum for advice and information that has helped me break into the WWI world.

Eric

Hello, Elarson,

Very nice work so far. A couple of points you might want to consider:

First, the control surfaces were streaked separately from the mainplanes and horizontal tail surfaces, and then attached afterwards. This means that the streaking pattern does not continue from one to the other: in fact, the pattern rarely, if ever, matched up.

Second, the nose of the triplane, just back of the cowling, featured fairly dark streaking, becoming progressively lighter as you move to the rear. I'm not sure why, other than a guess that the streaking started forward (with loaded brushes) and got lighter as the brush gave up its green paint/dope.

These points are, I think, easily applied to your model if you wish to pursue them. Other more experienced forumites please join in. And "Good Luck" with your build!

Please let me echo Trackpad's comments and add that your streaking job is very good for a first time builder. I would venture to say impressive. I would also say, a bit more in the right places and you got it. Model On!

..for the kind words and advice. It never dawned on me about the control surfaces but it sure makes sense! I will do a little "adjusting" on the streaks on them as well as the fuselage.

Thanks again,
Cheers,
Eric

Hi, Elarson,

You are very welcome! In fact, it was a few years ago when I was building the Roden 1/32nd scale triplane that I found out about the control surface streaking from, IIRC, Stephen Lawson! Interesting how things that go around, come around! Another example of just how valuable, and user friendly, this website is!
