Question Halberstadt. Town and aeroplanes.

Quote:
Halberstadt. Luftfahrtgeschichte in einer deutschen Fliegerstadt. (Gebundene Ausgabe)
von Werner Hartmann
GeraNova Zeitschriftenverlag (2000)
ISBN 978-3765472343
Any comments about this book?
As much as I am able to comprehend from the book description it is focussed on the history of the town, not exactly aeroplanes.
I am looking mostly for design / production / operation data about Halberstadt aeroplanes before or during the World War One.
Regards,
Yavor

Hi Yavor,

I cannot answer your questions about the book you referenced, since I have never seen it.

Have you, instead, seen this book?

Die Halberstadt CL.IV D-IBAO, Aus den Pionierjahren des deutschen Luftverkehrs by Marian Kryzan and Holger Steinle. Verlag E.S. Mittler & Sohn GmbH, Herford und Bonn, 1992. ISBN 3-8132-3, Warengruppe Nr. 41.

The book provides a very detailed look at the discovery and restoration of the Halberstadt CL. IV collection of Paul Strähle, and is particularly devoted to the civil version D-IBAO which is presently on display in Germany. However, it also provides a good history of die Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke 1912-1919 and gives a look at 27 separate designs from the Halberstadt firm, with photos and side-view drawings. It's a great book if you can find it.

Seems to me that Douglas Pardee did an article on Halberstadt aircraft in an old issue of "Cross & Cockade International" or Great Britain Journal. Have you seen that?

Greg

Thank you very much, Greg van!
I am going to track down the book you referenced.
List of Halberstadt specific books I am aware of is quite short. Windsock Datafiles about D-types, CL.II and CL.IV are all the sources I had seen, plus couple of contemporary Flight articles.
With kindest regards,
Yavor

Hi Yavor, I have this book by Werner Hartmann on Halberstadt - Luftfahrtgeschichte in einer deutschen Fliegerstadt.

As the title says it is 180 pages of aeroplane / flying history from the earliest days (Lilienthal, Graf Zeppelin, the Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke) through to the end of world war 2 and later. Everything centered / pivoted around the town of Halberstadt.

When you think you will receive a detailed history of the Halberstadt firm from being to end, with a detailed description and pictures of its machines, you might be disappointed. When you look at the book without this thought you see a beautiful book full of very interesting pictures [a Halberstadt fighter with rockets in 1916 ?).

The history of the Halberstadt machines is unfortunately not very complete available, probably because of failing archives etc.

Given the relative modest price of this big format book, printed on fine paper, there is certainly reason to buy this book when it is sold somewhere (probably on Ebay).

Cheers

Kees

Dear Yavor,

The article by Douglas T. Pardee is entitled "Halberstadt Serial & Work Numbers", and is found in Cross & Cockade International Journal, Volume 23, No. 2, 1992. It's a good effort to List all of the contract and production quantities of Halberstadt aircraft from July 1915 to the Armistice. It's pretty good!

On the topic of Halberstadt I found this picture of the nameplate of the unique Halberstadt C.V which is now restorated in the Brussels Museum. Interesting that the offical name is Halberstädter-Flugzeug-Werke GmbH.

More pictures on the restoration of this unique plane can be found here.

The original fabric on the wings (quite torn up since 1918) has been replaced by very new looking fabric Just as it was rolled out yesterday. Some (artificial ?) aging would be an idea.

Cheers

Kees

You are right, good, well printed photos are good reason to buy the book. It is available through Amazon.de for EUR 24,90 new / 17.43 used, but not for delivery in Bulgaria .
