How much seat time did voss have?

How much "seat" time did Voss have with the triplane before using in combat? How did he know how effective it would be in a flat turn? Did he have much experience with rotaries before using the triplane?
Just watched Dogfight's Voss episode and was amazed how much he got out of the triplane.
