I've given up trying to load RBII on my new system and must conclude that my CD is irretrievably damaged. It never really impressed me on my old system and I looked forward to seeing what a 64 meg card would make of it. Ho-hum.

To compensate I have been able to run European Air War, which my old machine couldn't manage at all, despite the game being in the Ģ10 bargain bracket at the time I bought it. I'm having a great time even though uncomfotable with the idea that a P47 will turn on a sixpence and knock anything out of the sky. Was there ever a EAW II?

ps. Has anybody tried Combat Flight Simulator II yet? What's the verdict? I quite fancy a whizz round in a Zero.

I've been playing it for a couple of years now and I like it a lot. It's pretty convincing for a simulation and it is fun. The game has its flaws, but every game does. The biggest problem is that the wingmen tend to run into one another with horrid frequency. There's a way you can make it happen less often, however.

I am using a new PC with Windows XP since some days and the result: Only Microsoft games are still running, e.g. CFS2 incl. Combat Aces.

IMHO this combination has a lot of flaws:
It is too easy to collide with the enemy and my stupid electronic wingmen collide in every second mission even if flying far behind me.

I was reported to be dead if I was victoriously finishing missions. The "damage models" are nonsense. I would expect completely different problems after some kinds of damages.

I had also games with better briefings, maps and menues in the past. I am also nerved if the PC is forcing me to leave the mission if I succeeded in achieving the mission goals. It is also strange to play WWI missions ina WWII environment.

Summary: There are (and were) better, more realistic and more challenging games available.
Nevertheless it is an air combat "sim" and therefore I donīt stopp to play it.

Every time I start to think that I am some kinda hotshot sim driver, I fire up CFS2. *If it is not realistic in some regards, in one thing I am sure that it is right on: *I fly my own ride into the ground more often than I get shot out of the saddle.

My big complaint is the fact that the vanilla version does not allow campaigns for Army or Marine drivers. *If you don't fly for Big Blue or the Rising Meatball, you don't fly. *Maybe there are patches out there that rectify this problem (at least it is a problem from my point of view), I am not aware of them.

PS: BTW, Peter, for its size (I say again, for its size) the P-47 was surprisingly nimble. Like the Fw-190A, P-47's had superb rolling ability which made them agile in vector rolls. Above 25,000 ft, their engine performance was hard to beat, and you probably know about the fact that they could dive like a brick. Eight half-inch Brownings was a formidable armament, too. Beyond that, the Jug was not my first choice, either.

The Jug shot down more German aircraft than any other allied aircraft according to Jablonski. And rate of roll is Sooooo important. This is where you can survive against a Zero with an F4-F, due to that higher rate of roll.

Joe:

Thanks for your endorsement on the Jug. *And I believe that you are correct in your assertion that T'bolts bagged more bad guys than any other ride.

Robert Johnson (recently departed from us) said in his biography that the performance of a P-47 was vastly superior to its adversaries above 25,000 ft, but the closer you got to the deck, the more that the Fw-190A became a dangerous opponent. *The Wuerger was the enemy a/c that American drivers feared the most, but its performance degraded quickly above 20,000. *Of course, up topside was where the heavy bombers were and the Heinies were hot for the dicke Autos most of all so that was where most of the action was. *As the war went on the quality of Luftwaffe drivers went down the toilet so no matter what kind of ride a German flier strapped on, the Jagdfliegers became little more than flying targets for veteran RAF and USAAF drivers.

I am not sure about the F4Fs though. *Top Naval Aviators could snap a Wildcat into vector rolls that were unbelievable (so long as there was lots of sky under their wings, because Wildcats tended to lose a ton of air during ACM) but nothing in the sky rolled like a Zeke until the F6F-3 made its debut in mid '43.

Whoever put the flight model to-gether for EAW obviously agrees with you. It's become my favourite mount for this sim at any rate.

A trip to "Games Zone" this morning revealed CFS III is on the shelves but failed to turn up CFS II. However, I did score a copy of RB 3D for a fiver (about $8:00). I can't say I'm any more impressed with it on my new system than I was with RB II on my old one. After playing EAW for a couple of weeks, with the odd foray into CFS I and Dawn of Aces, the graphics are less than stunning and the flight model a little sluggish. We need an up to date WWI sim guys.
