Sreiko,

There are some nice pioneer aviation shots in the collection. Unfortunately there is little information given with the photos.

Srecko. It is far easier to search via the special picture catalog of the Library of Congress. This is the start page of their Prints and Photographs Reading Room. Searching into all those pictures is not difficult, but be careful with the search terms.

You will also see that - although tens of thousands of pictures are scanned - there are probably even more which are not scanned. An example of that is the complete picture collection of the French weekly magazine L'Aerophile which ran from 1893-1947. Remember this are the original pictures which were used to illustrate that magazine, including a lot of pictures that never made it to the magazine at all.

You can read somethig on that collection here.

The Library of Congress has its pictures as follows:

- with or without preview (don't know why LC does this)

- downloadable (several formats) or not downloadable

- it is always possible to order copies (at cost)

The scans of the LC are unretouched scans of the original print or glass plate, so most of the times there are scatches or markings made by the picture journalists of those times. They make it a policy to scan 'is as'. After that you can always do all sort of Photoshop actions, but the original remians unaltered in the files of the LC.

There is a professional company who sells retouched (photoshopped) pictures of the Library of Congress on Old Pictures. These pictures can be bought by them in different sizes.

The rights and restrictions of the use of the LC pictures can be read here

Cheers

Srecko, just to show what the LC has as 'untapped' pictures.

Start with their catalog and type 'Airplanes--American--1900-1920'.

You will get 4 hits returned.

Preview No.2, which is a description of 6 albums with in total 2000 prints from 1906-1915.

Probably you may be lucky when there is a description of what is on the picture, otherwise a search can be started to discover what is on the picture

Cheers

Further on the issue of Library of Congress pictures on Flickr. This is from the blog of the Library of Congress where they describe the purpose of it.

Library of Congress Blog » My Friend Flickr: A Match Made in Photo Heaven (Library of Congress)

This is more on the photograph selection of the Library of Congress with goes (quote from the article) into 14 million pieces at the moment . Sure they don't know exactly what they have.

I did a random search and came across the Bain Collection and found some photos I've never seen before, including Roland Garros, a lineup of Sopwith Camels, two Gotha rotary engine biplane photos and several others of interest.
