Hi Garfield;

I have some drawings from Achim and there dated 1993 thou 2002. I think he updates his drawings as he goes along and come closer to a true replica. I thought that the Redfern plans were older but I'm not sure.

I can't recall who's plans Fred us but it's a thing of Beauty.

I like the detail that Achim has in his plans, but don't ask me I'm not a builder...

I like the question on how many are flying from the different plans.

Fred's triplane is based on the Sands plans. I think he has made changes to it since it was originally built.

Garfield,
I can add a little bit of info.

Redfern 1969
Sands 1972
Ray Overman 1969
EAA 1962

I believe that both Fred Murrin and Ross Walton started with Sands aircraft and constantly updated as more information became available. A simple 'for instance' is the gear leg length which Ron Sands shortened to provide easier ground handling. Both Murrin and Walton are/were swinging longer props and they needed the extra (original) height.

I have never heard a reference in this forum to the EAA drawings, penned by JS Dzik or of the Overman information being used.

I didn't look at all of them, but at least some of the Omaka Dr.1s are Redfern designs. The Great War Flying Museum aircraft are as well. Very obvious when you check the stick linkage and pickup locations for the front gear legs.

Hope that this helps you,

John

Are there any plans for the Dr.I with the quality and detail level of (or near)Replicraft, in the $50-150 range?

Thanks,
Spandau

New Fokker Dr.I Triplane Drawings!!!

Spandau,

Jim Kiger of REPLICRAFT and I are talking of a POSSIBLE new joint effort for a comprenensive Fokker Dr.I Triplane Plan Set of drawings and containing the same quality as his outstanding and newly updated Fokker D.VII drawings. It depends upon real Dr.I interest out there and Jim's energy level to take on yet another fighter project! But I for sure hope this one too might emerge from his fine talents.

Here are some samples of what we have, which is the ENTIRE airframe as ORIGINALLY built. These drawings are right down to the "nut and bolt" level of metric detail.

Regards, Gary Sewall

Thanks Gary,

I think that would be extremely useful. Although I'm looking for something that would be currently available, I would definitely purchase this, whenever it becomes available. I have the Replicraft Sopwith Pup and the "original" DVII drawings and they are fantastic. I'm only sorry that they won't be available in the near future.

Regards,
Steve

Some years ago I went through some bound back issues of EAA's Sport Aviation, and came upon a Triplane drawings that were presented serially over a number of issues. The issues with the Triplane drawings were from the '60s I believe. Would these have been the Dzik or Overmann drawings?

Regarding number of Triplane repros., a 1977 issue of World War I Aero published a special on the DR.I in which some 59 reproductions were either built or under construction. Leo Opdycke also maintained a card catalog of WWI airplane projects categorized by subject aircraft. I have been endeavoring to update the list of DR.I reproductions as I believe it has been the most reproduced of WWI aircraft. I've had lots of help from forumites and others in this endeavor. The task is complicated a bit by the fact that many of the projects and planes have changed hands and geographic location more than once. One interesting aspect of this is that several early Fokker repros. are still flying today.

I believe Peter M. Bowers (of Fly Baby fame) started the first 1950s EAA effort for Fokker Dr.I Triplane drawings. Then followed Walter ("Wimpy") Redfern in the late 1960s. Finally was the Ron Sands effort.

None of these past drawing efforts come very close to real historic accuracy with we now know today about the origial Dr.I Triplane's true structural design. It's time for a change.

Regards, Gary Sewall

I can not find any any Ray Overman Dr1 , but I belive 1 or 2 must exist .
Not 1 Engels Dr1 exist .
It looks like most Dr1 made from Redfern drawings .
