G'day my frinds.

Long time no see. If I'd like to buy a flight sim today, which one should I buy, why?
(WWI and WWII I'm interested in both).

Ill give my .o2 cents...

Red baron 3d for sure for ww1

European air war for WW2 in the west, covering Battle of britain, then '43-45. with add ons, can cover 42-45.

Il2 sturmovik: ww 2 eastern front sim, latest addition to the genre.

these 3 are perhaps the best out there at this time. there are others, but have flaws and dont have the fan base that these 3 do.

Myself, since i dont do any theater add ons for EAW for pacific, i use Microsoft combat flight simulator 2, pacific theater for my fix. it has dumb friendly AI, flight models that are ok (NOT the best) it has plenty of add ons, if u can find them.

for me, those are about it.
i also own Mig Alley for my Korean war fix.

the only other sim out there that 'sounds good' is Rowans Battle of Britain.
ill defer to those that picked that one up to comment.

I'll throw in 2 cents as well. My favourite sim for flying is Mig Alley, the combats above 25,000 feet are majestic and the flight models of the aircraft are a great balance between the aircraft being twitchy snarly over powerful beasts and soft sweet sensitive birds. I enjoy it immensely.

Battle of Britain has the best campaign I have played, but I dont fly it as much as Mig Alley. IL2 is pretty good as well but I havent gone deeply into it.

Since no one mentioned them, I think that you would be wise to consider MicroSoft's Combat Flight Simulator and CFM2. They are almost trouble free and compatible with most controllers. I am told that there is a patch for CFM2 that allows the game to play WWI missions also, but I do not have it as of yet.

I own MigAlley, but cannot get it to load on my systems. Dunno why.

Wings Of Glory. A bit old but really nice ww1 flight sim. And it even has a great story with characters.

Hello,

This is my first post.I'm playing an old game from 96 , called Flying Corps, i find it most amusing, the graphics are excellent for 96 and i've been doing many of the missions successfuly, still there are many levels of dificulty and i'm on intermediate plus. You can enable , disable many options that will determine the level of dificulty.
Still there are older games from WW 1 like Wings of Glory, Dawn Patrol and Red Baron .

I have two WWII sims, both made by Microsoft covering the European and Pacific theaters. I use a MS Force Feedback stick with them and it adds quite a bit of realism. Lots of Allied and Axis planes to pick to fly and you can dogfight the computer or either dialup someone with the same sim and fight them or enter a game room and take part in a free-for-all!

I know it's an unpopular opinion around here, mostly I think because many of the flight sim enthusiasts around here really go in for the historical campaign recreations, or the sheer number of modelled aircraft available in games like RB, but for, IMHO, best flight model, and certainly for best competition with opponents, play one of the non-MS mega-player online sims.

Personally I like DOA for WWI and Aces High for WWII.

If you don't mind spending the money, their historic battle recreations can't be beat. And for good head-to-head combat their open arenas are a blast too; as long as you don't mind mixing aircraft types beyond what would have been found during the real time period.

I must add that I haven't played with any combat type sim for more than a year now, but when I was playing, those would have been my suggestions.
