WWI Tracer Ammo

I came across an interesting paragraph "Tracer Bullets" in Flight, October 19,1916:

Flight PDF Archive - fDGHT] very utmost to obtain

Seems to imply that pilots downed and caught with "tracer ammo" were subject to (1) court martial, and (2) sentenced to death!!!!!!

Is this the way "tracer ammo" in WWI aviation was viewed, handled and dealt with????

I never knew it was considered a "war crime"!

KC,

There are differences between tracer and incendiary ammunition. A good place to turn for more information is this thread right here on The Aerodrome:

Dan,

Thank you for the reply. I already know the different kinds and uses for the ammo's utilized.

However, this newletter article addressed "what appears at that time" to the illegality of "tracer bullets". I'm assuming it's what we call "tracers" today.

Since it was being widely used by both sides, I was wondering about the "court-martial", "sentenced to death" part of the article.

There was a thread in late April of 2006 called "Written Orders Authorizing the use of Incendiary Ammunition" that included a discussion of the 'death threat' rumors. You might find that thread of interest.

Just do a forum search on "Incendiary Ammunition", and the thread should pop right up!
