Question A.w.s.d. 5 (o.a.w.)

i am seeking help in what this piece is.

Made of metal that has rusted, it is hollow. it is close to the color of the outer border of this message.

I have a 16" sheared off piece of what I take to be a wing (Or ?) strut. The strut would have been 2" wide and on the end (the other end was twisted or sheared off and is a mess) is a fitting like a mini bicycle fork with a 5/16 " hole on each side. In Black letters 3/4" high running length wise is " A.W.S.D. 5. a.", under in letters 1/2" high is "(A.O.W/) and 5" above the end with the fitting is a 1" high "L" with 3 numbers 7/16" high. The last 2 numbers are 70 but the first number is missing paint. I would guess it to be 5 or 6.

Thanks
Gus Martin

Hi gus,
I'm no expert on these, & you may find more response listing this under "aircraft"

This does read like a strut from an Albatros D.Va

Albatros Werke Schneidermuhl = AWS
D.5.A = D.Va
Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke = O.A.W
The lettering & numerals will relate to the factory work number or possibly the part itself
.
As I say there are many more experts who can elaborate or correct this
