WITH THE AMERICAN ARMIES IN FRANCE. Nov. 18—Captain
Eddie Rickenbacker, of Columbus, Ohio, dean of American aces, is believed to have fired the last shot of the war.
He was given the honor of making the last flight over the German lines before the armistice became effective.
Rickenbacker left his hangar at 10:45 a. m. last Monday for his last flight.
At exactly 10:59 Rickenbacker passed over a German transport column and set the trigger of his machine gun down for one minute.
In that time he poured 850 rounds of shot into the boches, who scattered before him.
General Liggett yesterday decorated Rickenbacker, Lieutenant Louis Simon, also of Columbus, and five other aviators, with the American distinguished service cross.
Both Rickenbacker and Simon wer granted medals by the French government last week.
