My question is have the fakers gotten this far?

Unfortunately this badge cannot be posted large enough for you to see the detail. Here are some details I really like. The crown, at the top under the orb, these are not three balls at the top but are the actual crown arches turning back on themselves. The inside of the bottom of the crown is filled with vertical lines The laurel leaves on the left show all of the veins and leaf structures. The oak leaves on the right show extreme detail, even the tiny cups of the acorns are cross hatched. The waves flowing toward you at the bottom show perfect formation and the white caps are very distinct. While this badge is silver it matches in every detail known stamped examples. I will try to post some smaller sections. This badge is marked H Schaper with crown and half moon and 800. We have in our collection a set of silverware for the 178 Infantry regiment with the exact same marks in every minute detail.

Now the engraving is not considered, just the badge. If anyone is interested I can send you some very large files that you can see every minute detail.

Hi Vic

Can you give the whole text on the backside, like Zeebrügge, Helgoland and some date xxx 1918...and I might be able to identify the pilot who it belonged to...

Soderbaum:

The entire text of the back is more commemorative in nature as you see.

Helogoland

Zebrugge

1914-18

The engraving was most likely added after the war, but I expect before the mid-30's. A least that is the opinion of a German Jeweler that works with many engraved pieces of differing styles.

Thanks for looking.
