July 11 1917 in Palestine

To continue the story:

90 years ago today , a German reconnaissance machine accompanied by a single seat fighter dropped a message on the Deir el Balah airfield informing the R.F.C. of the death of Brookes and his burial with military honours , two letters from Vautin - one to his C.O. Major R . Williams and one to his father.

There was also a letter from G. Felmy to R. Williams saying that they had taken Vautin on a tour of Jerusalem. There was also a request for Vautin's kit to be dropped by B.E.2c flying a certain course and identifying herself with a smoke bomb. Vautin was said to be very popular with the personal of FA 300

The following day Capt. Murry-Jones dropped Vautin's kit at Huj airfield.
The Germans waved and he was not fired at going or returning.

Great post

Hey Marlin,

Thanks for taking up the challenge, and sharing this wonderful story with us.

As you know, "Aces and Kings", a wonderful book by L.W. Sutherland, M.C., D,C,M. has additional marvelous stories like this.

Chivalry was not dead yet over the skies of Palestine.

Greg
