"Jasta 40" Matte Painting
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g9...an/picwip1.jpg
This is a matte painting (photo editing and digital painting) that is a work in progress depicting the aircraft of Ltn Carl Degelow and Ltn Hermann Gilly of Jasta 40. Many thanks to Russell Smith for allowing me to use photos he had taken at Omaka.
crits and comment would be appreciated.

I like it very much Hitori. I especially like the composition, with the trees and fence framing the planes, the distant treeline, and the observer's viewpoint.
The planes colors look right, but Degelow's is close enough to the observer that it should probably show more wing rib and fuselage/rudder/elevator frame detail - D.VII's often acquire some slack in the fuselage cloth covering that highlight frame components. And possibly the ailerons down a bit more and the elevator up slightly more.

Hi Hitori, in reading what I wrote last night I hope I didn't mislead you . . .
The ailerons move up and down in a coordinated and opposite fashion. So if you want the plane to bank left (to port), you move the stick left; the left aileron will come up and the right aileron will go down proportional to the stick movement. To make the tail follow the bank in a "coordinated" manner, you would also apply left rudder, deflecting the rudder to the left.
But you show the planes on landing approach, with no bank, so perhaps the way you've shown only slight aileron movement is correct; just enough to correct for a small crosswind that's throwing the plane off-level.
I still think the elevator would be somewhat more up, to keep the nose level on landing approach.
Perhaps the best thing before making further changes would be to post a question about aileron, rudder and elevator position for a D.VII on landing approach over in the Aircraft section -- there are people there who have actually built and flown replica D.VIIs. Their advice on this matter will be far more accurate than mine.

Hitori,
That is a very nice composition. I really like the colors you used and the way you laid out the various components of the picture.

Couple of Comments
Kyo-san,
I have viewed your work on several occasions and have the following comments about your work in progress.
The first has to do with the illumination of the foreground DVII. It seems to be too dark. I think increasing its illumination will help highlight the subject enhancing the paintings key point impact. The background DVII is all right the way it is.
The second is, and may be controversial, is that the entire scene is in focus. I think a slight blurring of the background would aid in framing the subject. Highly focused background detail does not generally add to the overall recognition and impact of the main subject. The foreground should remain in focus as it frames the viewers perspective of the subject and is important in setting the instantaneous overall feel for the painting...,

Focus Pokus
Hi Hitori Kyo,
This is a most unusual reply in that I have not viewed your posted image yet. After reading these responses, I must agree with Gil.
From an artist' perspective, focus on subject, not backround.
Regards,
FOKKERJ
