Zog

From Les Sutherland's book,

"Every flight has it's zog, a kind of two-wheeled jinker, with aeroplane wheels. The zog was used to facilitate the movement of planes on the ground. It had a shallow box in the centre of the axle, which accepted the tail skid of the plane; and a long handle by which the plane was pulled about. The zog was also used to carry ammunition, camrea gear etc"

Has anyone a photo of a zog?

Here you will find a photo of a German Zog. Because of the constant lack of spareparts the Germans obviously used other wheels.

A zog !?! So that's what these little things are called. We've built a couple of them at Old Kingsbury Aerodrome to help move our planes around. Just didn't know their name. We didn't use airplane wheels, just 10-12 inch inflatable tires / wheels that we picked up at a hardware store. These devices make moving tailwheel aircraft around far, far easier and safer. I'll see if I have any pictures of us using one and I'll post it.

Examples:

Windsock Datafile 10 - SE5a Pg 10
Windsock Datafile Special - SE5a Pg 12

4 Years of Thunder 'Bloody April': @ 14' 30" a nice piece of footage of a HP O/400 being moved; @37' 20" a very brief bit on 1AFC moving some F.2bs.

I also have some very nice footage from the AWM showing their use by 3AFC. The best bit is the complete footage of the little bit shown in 4YOT which shows them clearly including a bit where one is being used as a bomb trolley while loading up a Martinsyde Elephant with 20lb bombs for a raid. *

As I can't produce MPEGs I have no idea how to get this to you unless I send you a PAL tape you can convert into NTSC.

Zog *??? - Who'd have thought?

I know you built a model of the Curtiss Jenny in the past. If you keep extra bits for your spares box or keep the instructions of kits you've built in the past go have a look. The Jenny kit has a zog!

The major difference I can see between the zogs on the footage I have and the kit (which I have) is that the box for the tailskid is square not cylindrical as in the kit.

Good grief Mike, thanks. I go to the OKA website every day but missed that picture. I'm a member of Team Fokker and move the D.VII and Dr.I with a zog often. Now I know what it's called. I also do the newsletter and I believe you're a new member. Welcome. Any relation to Irene Szwarc?
