WW1 Fiction

Hello,

I am looking for both authors and titles for WW1 Aviation fiction. Does anyone know where I can research the topic? Any reccomendations for books that deal with this subject/genre?

Basically I am looking for works of fiction, books, that the main subject matter is World War One aviation. Any suggestions are most helpful.

Thanks..

Check out the links on the Aerodrome:

I would recommend, above many, Winged Victory by V.M. Yeates. Not only one of the best fiction books I have ever read, but one of the books I have ever read....PERIOD!

We re-issued the third volume in the Bandy Papers series, It’s Me Again, just recently, so the WW1 volumes (1-3) are all in print now:

The Friendless Sky, Alexander McKee

This is not a book of fiction but a general history book. One reviewer said that if you are only going to read one history book about the subject of WWI aviation, this is a good choice.

Hello,

One day when wandering around a small aviation museum in Kent, i picked up a copy of the this book "Flight of Youth" by Ron Graham, (one of the deications is to a Christopher Graham Engine Fitter RFC who I presume is a relative of the author)

This tells the story of a young lad from Yorkshire who joins the RFC to train to be a mechanic, and follows his journey where he ends up as a RE 8 pilot.

I would just like to say this was a very fortunate find, because in my opinion it is the BEST novel of flying in the Great War I have ever read, in regards to the story, the feel for the times, (Class structure etc) and technical detail.

I would certainly reccomend seeking this out, (Amazon UK seem to have a couple of copies available), but seeing it was produced by a small publishing house it may be quite a rarity.

And no, my copy is not for sale.

Cheers

PGH

Romani,

I had it checked as fiction, and I didn't go back and check. Thanks for the correction. It is a dramatic recreation of stories, but based on fact.

Cool An Ace Minus One

I thoroughly enjoyed a rather recent work of fiction about World War I aviation titled "An Ace Minus One" by Timothy Morrisroe. The protagonist is an American volunteer with the Lafayette Escadrille. The flying scenes are the most authentic I have ever come across, and I know a bit about aviation. The story line is superb with excellent characterization, especially of historical figures such as Charles Nungesser and Raoul Lufbery. The book can be ordered at Amazon, and there is a direct link from the >books >fiction page of this website.

...then there's The Greatest Great War Aviation Novel Ever:
Duel Over Douai or: Chattering Spandaus
remains a Work In Progress.
But hey, it's only been 9 years. Jack and Boom and I are still working on it...

Barrett, Old Friend, I must beg to differ on your choice. The greatest WWI Aviation novel is, and I can't believe it has not been mentioned here, "The Aerodrome Novel."

It has everything one could desire of this era. Alcoholics, calumny, gender bending, allusions to unusual sexual practices, dereliction of duty and blame shifting of the highest degree. Not to mention taking credit for another's achievements.

IN VINO VERITAS but on the other hand, maybe not.

VBR
