I have little to offer, but these comments may, at least, get a discussion started. According to Jasta Boelcke, Ltn Egon Könemann, apparently flying an Albatros scout, was shot down in combat with Camels on 22 August 1917, in the vicinity of Lombartzyde. Casualties of the German Air Service confirms this date, but offers the alternate spelling of Lombardzyde.

I have no information as to the location of the engagement by either version of the name.

Albatros claims by Camel pilots on the 22 August 1917 date were filed by Naval 3 Squadron pilots Capt. Edwin T. Hayne, (Albatros DV) over S. Middelkerke, and by Flt. Lt George B. Anderson, (Albatros DIII) over St Pierre Capelle. Both of these claims were timed at 1550 hrs, and were presumably part of a larger overall engagement. Lt Anderson's claim appears to correlate with the loss of FlugzgObMt Luitjens of MFJ1.

Also on 22 August 1917, an Albatros DV was claimed by Capt. Clive F. Collett over Gheluwe.

Claims data is extracted from Above the Trenches, and does not include any claims by non-ace British pilots.

Tom,

Thanks for your reply, Hayne probably is the man, as the distance between Middelkerke en Lombardsijde is just a few miles.

Best from Johan
