Nungesser Incidents

Hello. I once read that Charles Nungesser shot down a British plane that persisted in attacking him despite Charles' attempts to identify himself as a friendly. Any truth to this story? If so, any info on who the pilot may have been? Also read that Charles engaged in a long duel with a German Halberstadt which followed him (Charles) back to his aerodrome and flew low over him and saluted. Again, any truth to this? Thanks.

I believe that incident with the British plane was why Nungesser painted the red, white and blue stripes on his Nieuport.

Friendly fire incidents such as these were fairly common.

- The English pilot : I asked the question a few months ago, but nobody is able to indentify the british pilot. THe story seems to be true in my opinion, confirmed by oral testimony.

- The duel : if the duel happened, the german pilot was surely not flying an Halberstadt, an out-of date plane at that moment. Joseph Jacobs seems a possible opponent.
