Thumbs down plane markings

The crossed swords and the falcon paint schemes on the fokkers in Flyboys. Did any pilots use these markings? When I was a kid I had toy triplanes with those same markings so I was wondering how they came to use them. I remember them very well and was surprised to see them in the film.
