James McCudden wrote once of flying in a snow storm and how he had to fly low enough to follow a roadway that he recognised to his assigned landing site. Also the famous Red Baron recorded in his autobiography the time as a young pilot, he flew through a storm cloud and almost paid for the deed with his life. Hope this helps.
