Friedrich von Arnauld de la Periere

January 9, 1915 the first plane to be launched from a submarine was piloted by Leutnant Friedrich von Arnauld de la Periere from U-12 off Zeebrugge. The pilot was the brother of Lothar von Arnauld de la Periere who by wars end sunk more ships and accounted for more tonnage than any other submariner in history ( 194 ships for 450,000 tons).
I assume Friedrich continued his service as a naval aviator. Does anyone have further details regarding him?

Thanks.

Hello,
Oblt zur See Friedrich von Arnauld de la Perriere was the first commander of Seeflugstation Zeebrugge, until he was taken prisoner on 17/12/1915.
Near Nieuport his seaplane Friedrichshafen suffered engine trouble, and a French ship brought him to Dunkirk.

Submarine U12 arrived at Zeebrugge on 9/11/1914 and left for Helgoland on 24/1/1915.

I would be interested in more info concerning the launching from the sub.

Regards,

Cnock

The type aircraft was a Friedrichshafen F.F.29 single-seater seaplane,
(#204). I believe it was unarmed. Apparently this aircraft wash lashed athwartship on U-12 forward of the conning tower. The plane was freed and the bow submerged for launch. As I understand it German Naval command
was unimpressed by the experiment and discontinued the use of U-Boats as aircraft hangers.
U-12 survived only until March 10 of 1915 when it was rammed by an armed trawler and then scuttled. Twenty of its crew of thirty were killed. The survivors became P.O.W's.

Hello,

Thank You for the additional info.

The unarmed Friedrichshafen FF 29 nr. 204 (120 HP) was one of the first to be in action at Zeebrugge, together with nr.203.

When Oblt Friedrich von Arnauld de la Perriere was taken prisoner, he flew FF 33 nr.493.

Regards,

Cnock
