Fate of German Artillery Officer

I'm looking for any information, or advice on how to get some, on a Ltn C Mayweg who was serving with an unidentified German artillery regiment near Hollebeke in early December 1917.

If it seems off-topic, my interest stems from his being responsible for the burial of 2/Lt's Bevan and Gloster, of 20 Squadron RFC, who were killed 03.12.17, and for writing a very compassionate letter to the RFC in which he sought to reassure Gloster's wife that her husband's death was instant, and that he did not suffer.

It would be nice to know if this very chivalrous and compassionate officer survived the war.

Hello Bob,

you are probably searching for a Lt. Maiweg. There had been two Officers with this name within 2.Thüringisches Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 55. This Regiment served at the end of 1917 in Flanders.

The two officers were:

Lt. Erich Maiweg, who survived the war.

Lt. Friedrich Maiweg, who was KIA on 23 Mar 1918 west of Courcelles.

I do not know if these two men were brothers...

Perhaps, one of the two guys is your man...

Immo,

My source is a typed British translation of the letter in Gloster's Service Record file, and it spells the name as "C. Mayweg". I'm visiting Kew again in a couple of weeks, and I'll recheck the file to make sure the original is not there. If it is I'll scrutinise it to re-check the spelling. It could be a British typo...

Thanks for your help.

Bob
