To Dave Watts; Banding on Mercedes and BMW

Question for Dave Watts;
Greetings Dave of note there is some evidence of colour banding on the base of the cylinder jackets of the Mercedes and BMW inline engines. Your has white and the the ones on "U.10" engine were white as well. BMW used either green or red? What were these for? Thanks in advance. Stephen
