I already know about Hell's Angels, The Blue Max and Dawn Patrol etc etc but what are the most recent WWI aviation films that are worth anything at all? Seems like there has not been a decent one in at least 25-30 years! Pity that! I have been working on a screenplay for just this reason and if the gods grant me my wish you will get the best WWI aviation film ever committed to the screen. With all the great CGI effects these says you can imagine what the dogfight scenes will look like.

re bonsoir,
Just come back to say that it is for me the best WWI AVIATION movie.
About WWI period, in France, we have some outstanding WWI war movies, like: " La vie et rien d'autre", "La chambre des officiers", " Capitaine Conan" this last one is fantastic, but I don't know if they are available in english, in DVD maybe?
I know, in other hand, that the man who do the "Tolkien Saga", I don't remember his name and the name of the movies " Lord of the ring???", is an enthusiast for WWI modeling, I saw him, when he pay a visit to a french model shop, during his french promotional tour.
The hope is life
Bonsoir.
Philippe

Call me nuts, but I think real airplanes or good models still look a heck of a lot better than CGI planes. :-/

Agreed, however trying convincing a production company to build upwards of 20-30 replica Camels, Fokkers etc, and a couple of Gothas!!

I liked Brown vs. Richthofen (I think that's the correct title). It was definitely much better than the Blue Max.

A slightly more recent WW I aero film than TBM is Zeppelin. Can't speak to nuts & bolts accuracy of the Zep but Elke Sommer sure looked cute in her flying togs.
Then there's "Darling Lilli." :
As for "AH" and "vR&B", preferences duly noted, but IMO neither comes close to TBM for any number of reasons: technical, hysterical (!), or dramatical! Some folks like Fords and some like Chevys.
It is definitely time for a New Movie. Conscientious use of CGI for Zeps, Gothas & Riesen versus BEs, Camels & BFs is to die for, dude!

Drew, In "We Were Soldiers" they used CGI very well to reproduce Viet Nam Era aircraft. *It was a great job. *Thanks to George Lucas and his ILM, CGI is getting better and better. *
So, I think WWI CGI would be...awesome....

There was an episode of Young Indiana Jones called something like, "Attack of the Hawkmen." It featured 1/16 (I think) scale flying models and they looked really, really good. In fact, I wondered if they were using planes from Rheinbeck until I found an article on-line about the models.
Part of what gets me about CGI planes is that they seldom move the way real planes (or models) do. Their movements are often dictated by the frame rather than physics.
I'll take the flying scenes from Tora Tora Tora over what I've seen of those in Pearl Harbor.
If I were doing the special effects, I'd use flying models for many of the shots. I'd also use them as motion capture models for the CGI planes. That way, even the computerized planes would move well.
Regards,
