The last Dr1 pilot?

Was Rudolph Hess the longest living Dr1 pilot; if not who was?

Thanks

Hi,

I don't believe that Rudolf Hess flew a Fokker Dr.I, at least not in combat (a photo does exist of him in front of the Fokker Triplane though). Rudolf Hess' first assignment as a fighter pilot was with Jasta 35b in October 1918, which had no triplanes.

I think that Hans-Georg von der Osten would be a good candidate, flying with MvR while with Jasta 11, and past away in March 1987. Or maybe Carl-August von Schönebeck, who died in September 1989. I am unsure if he flew a triplane in combat though.

regards,

Darren

Thanks Wingedwarrior
You made me go back and check the picture, and the part I missed is that it was unarmed and belonged to jastaschule II. Also Hess died in Aug of 87 so that would have made Carl-August von Schönebeck a contender for the longest living Dr1 pilot.

Glad I could be of assistance. I tried to find that photo of Hess in front of a Dr.I, but had no luck. Is it possible for you to post it on the forum?

regards,

Darren

It is probably at Jastaschule I or II. The Dr.I is "defanged" with its guns removed.

Engine has pushrods in front, and crankcase style ala Gnôme and not Oberursel/LeRhone style. It may be fitted with a 7-cylinder Goebel Goe. II rotary engine. That says training machine!

This is what I have been trying to figure out, which DR.I's were send to the Jastaschule I & II after the D.VII's were deployed. I have been looking for photos of the Jastaschule to see if I can tell which ones they are. I think this is the first photo of a DR.I at a Jastaschule that I have seen.

Are there any more photos of the Jastaschule with DR.I's? I have read too that some of the DR.I's went to some of the Kests, again I can't find any photos of Kests with DR.I's.
