Jasta 60

Does anyone know what aircraft Jasta 60 operated and how they might have been painted.

The Jasta Pilots has this to say about J60: "Fokker DVIIs in 1918 had black and white checkerboard tailplanes."

It doesn't have any information on any other aircraft they flew. Looks like they were formed in January and put in their first claim in March, so a majority of their action would have been in the DVIIs.

Hi,

Russell's quite right. I can't be sure, but I imagine their initial equipment was probably Albatros D.Va or perhaps some OAW-built D.IIIs. Sadly I don't know much of the unit's early markings or aircraft.

However, by mid-to-late summer 1918 they definitely had OAW-built Fokker D.VIIs. By that time the unit marking was a checkerboard painted on the tailplane and elevators, in white and (probably) black. Pilot's personal markings in the form of colored fuselage bands or pictorial emblems were painted on the fuselage between the cockpit and the national insignia.

You can find photos of Jasta 60 D.VIIs, and nice color profiles, in Osprey's "Fokker D VII Aces of World War I, Volume 2" and also in Ray Rimell's "Fokker D.VII Anthology No. 3" from Albatros Productions .

Hope that helps,
