Can anyone help me?
I just bought red baron II from ebay and I know it is an old game, but I though my computer could still run it, but when I install it it gives a 16 bit windows subsystem message and says "the system file is not suitible for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications." Is there a way to fix this and run this program.

Hello edo14,
oops, this is my first post here.
First we'd need some info: Which operating system do you have, which graphic card (important) and so on.
If you run it with WinXP, there are several tools to get it running. You can get some of them here:
http://www.wings-of-valor.net/
as well you can also post questions in their forum.
There are also a lot of patches available that make RedBaron an up-to-date simulator, most are also available via links from the site mentioned above.
Greetings,
Catfish

I do have windows xp, but I have no clue what graphic card I am running, probably whatever basic one comes with a compaq presario computer. I tried to download the 3d super patch and run it before I install the game but it won't let me install either and it gives me the same message as when I tried to install the original game. I am just waiting for the administrators to let me on the forums for the wings of valor site. That is where I tried to download the super patch.

I know of a lot of folks that are more computer savvy than am I who cannot make RB3D and RBII to run on XP. For those that do, more power to ya.
My best recommendation is to partition your hard drive and to set up multiple systems. On the one that you game, you run Win98. On that system, you do not access the Web--Win98 is too vulnerable to intrusion so if you run-&-gun on the Internet on a '98 system, you will suffer the consequences.
I have run RB3D on Win2000, but the program ran too fast for me to keep up and I kept on crashing. Keep in mind that I did not set it up so I do not have a clue as to what it took to get there.
I am told that there are ways of slowing down the processor to make RB3D run on Win2000, but I decided not to go that way since I have an AMD system that I reserve just for games that runs nothing but Win98 and the problem just does not exist for me. I walk down the hall to my den, log on to my game computer and fly all the missions that I want.
Best of luck.
Shooter sends
PS: I do not use Multiplayer.

Hey edo14, do a search on line and you'll find more patches to make RBII & 3D run on XP than you will ever need. My experiences are similar to Shooter's however and I finally gave up and will eventually(maybe) get an older computer and install Windows 98 and RB/3D. But some new WWI sims are coming from what I hear.

Already here, and it's free, Over Flanders Field.. you will need to buy a new or used version of Combat Flight Simulator 3, but the OFF mod, which is huge, is a free download, or we can send it to you by mail.
Take a look: http://off.oldbrowndog.net/
Also a glowing 6 page article in the March issue of Computer Pilot all about OFF.

Thanks rabu, I'll check it out. I had heard about OFF here on the "drome" but being a new member I've been having so much fun going through the archives and such that I haven't checked it out yet. Been out of the sim/game world a while too because of a lousy computer. The "new" one is set up for games so I'm ready for a good WWI sim. I sometimes miss the the old Red Baron where you used maps to help navigate and you could paint your aircraft easily but the graphics weren't that great were they? Sounds like a good time to dust off the old joystick and climb back in the cockpit.

and the gaming companies can't figure it out...
I'm into PC gaming, mostly military FPS stuff and flight sims. I read a lot of gaming related magazines and keep seeing the same complaint in editorials and letters from subscribers. Everything has been done and everything is more of the same old same old with different graphics. To a degree, that seems true. Red Baron 3D is still considered by about all to be the best WWI flight sim out of a handful that were ever released. The Promised Land created a heck of an outstanding patch that made the game absolutely superb! Throughout the internet, all manner of groups supported the game, played the game, modded it, and generally kept it going with a devotion few games ever get. Seems to me someone in the gaming industry would have noticed this. Think about it - a decent WWI sim that could make use of today's graphic cards, disk drive sizes, and general computing horsepower! It would have a ready made market that would certainly make it worthwhile to produce and sell such game. How many WWI sims were ever produced? Four? Talk about exclusivity! With advances in mulltiplayer technology and modern physics engines making ultra realistic flight models, squadron play would be beyond belief! Yet we see everything but a good WWI combat simulator. Cowboys, mafia king pins, drug runners, freakin' PEOPLE (Sims), space aliens, roller coasters, zoos, street racing, NASCAR! Enough already!! Maybe, those of us who would like to see a decent WWI simulator need to start writing to the magazines and to the game developers and let it be known that we're out here! And we want a game!!!!!!!

Well, Jimmy, I don't think you have tried OFF, or aren't aware of it... it's turning into the best WWI sim so far. Yes, RedBaron was great, but it's gone as far as it can and is really getting dated and buggy, and most are now saying the crown goes to OFF.
The other hopeful coming up is the GT Knights of the Sky, which will be out maybe later this year, but I hope they don't rush it out the door, so far it looks superb graphics wise. And, Third Wire's WWI sim is comming along quite nicely.

No, I wasn't aware of it until I found another thread elsewhere at this forum. I also came across a great thread where the entire WWI sim issue was discussed with very good points made. It had been a bit since anything was added so I may think it over a bit and then post some thoughts there. Anyways, I downloaded OFF, but haven't installed it yet. I'm looking forward to seeing if at is as good as I hear it is.
