German Paint Jobs

I am amazed at the dazzling variety of paint jobs on German WW1 aircraft. They really went to town with an amazing variety of stripes, hexes, checkerboards, and insignia.

What I'd like to know is- obviously this was done "in the field". Where did they get the paint? And how did they do these patterns so expertly? I would expect to see stripes of varying thickness, sloppy patterns of checkerboards, and kindergarten style insignias. But look at the plates in books, and in photos, and they look fantastic.

How did they pull this off?
