How red was Von Richthofen's Triplane
I have searched real hard on this forum , but so far I haven't found a topic about the subject.
Von Richthofen was known as the Red Baron, it is for sure that most of his planes were partly red. But,... The Fokker Dreidecker in which he was killed is always painted entirely red on most drawings, or built like that. Is this for sure? Was his final Dreidecker really entirely RED?
This is supposed to be the only picture of the plane. As far as I can see the engine cowling looks white and the undersurface is blue.
Greetings, Nico

I'm not sure about this plane; I'm at work right now and have to wait until I get home to check this photo out. If you notice the Tail is still in the Eisernes Kreuz along with the under wings. MvR didn't fly 425/17 until I believe the 20th. and 21 of April. His mount was 477/17. Some talk here on the forum have subjected that it was in for maintenance so he used 425/17 as a temporary ride.
All the evidence is the whole plane was red and that the National Markings were changed to the Balkenkreuz mandated by the Idflieg by the 17 March 1918. and then redesigned to a ratio of 1:4 by the 10 April 1918.
Here is a profile of 425/17:
Fok. Dr.I 425/17

KITBOY,
You need to check out a thread started by Tim West called ( Fok Dr.425/17 ).
He has a art print on there all made with his computer.
He has about the best looking Red Baron 425/17 DrI that i have ever seen.
Plus you can read on the thread what the experts think of his 425/17.
Tim just started another thread called ( No more Fokkers! ) and it also has his final draft of the 425/17.
Also the photo you posted on here does not even have the right german marking (cross) or white rudder to be 425/17.
Hope this helps.
Later Days,
JEP

This triplane ( picture) unless highly redone in photoshop, is not 425/17 or 477/17. My guess would be from Jasta 12?

What Jasta?
Kitboy:
That is NOT a photo of Fok.DR.I 425/17 or 477/17! IT is a photo of a Fok.DR.I from JASTA 12! From the lack of decoration on the fuselage, it possibly be Fok.DR.I 404/17, the machine of Hptm. Adolf Ritter von Tutschek, Kommanduer of Jage.Nr.II.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

von Tutschek!
The tail, from the front of the crosses back, appears to be black as well...
Nico, this pic is from "Fokker DrI in Action" from Squadron/Signal. Heinz Nowarra mislabelled MANY pictures in this book. If you have it, there is a photo on p.36, upper right (again mislabelled), of one of his all-red tripes. It's probably either 477/17 or 425/17.
Incidently, there are a couple of other photos, correctly labelled, of von Tutschek's plane in this book as well. And the cover illustration.

Maybe it disappeared into the ether along with 6 months of threads in 1997 or 1998 but there was a thread about the colour of von Richthofen's dreidekker in which it was concluded that the colour was closer to rust than red and some wag, it might have been Stephanie as I've heard her tell the yarn, started referring to the WW 1 leading ace as the Rusty Baron.
