Eduard Camel Engine

I am building an Eduard 1/48 Sopwith Camel (F.1 Profipack) and my intent is to model it as an American Camel from the 17th Aero Squadron. The 17th Camels had LeRhone engines. The engine in the kit looks to me to be a Clerget. Is that correct? Do any of the other Eduard Camel kits have LeRhone engines or do I need to bash the Clerget into a LeRhone? Thanks.

The Le Rhone Camel had a different cowling....

slightly deeper and more rounded looking.

There are aftermarket sources for the Le Rhone, Aeroclub in white metal or the fantastic Vector ones (a bit pricey but wonderful detail). Aeroclub can be had from their own website and Vector from Neomega in the UK and Victory (I think) in the US. You could always rob a Le Rhone from Eduard's Nieuport 17 which might also provide a better cowling - not sure how the cross sections match though. None of the other Eduard Camels have a Le Rhone as far as I know.

In 1/72 roseparts used to do a Le Rhone cowling for the camel but I don't know of anyone doing so in 1/48.

AEF rotary engined Camels

Try the DML Oberursel and add a scribed line around the prop shaft base. Eduard has LeRhone's with various amounts of detailing. The newer Nieuport 17 kits have the better detailing.

Ultimately there were to be a total of four frontline units in the AEF equipped withe the “Camel.” There was the 41th & 148th Aero Squadrons with 130hp Clerget powered machines. The 17th Aero was equipped with 120hp LeRhône types and as has been covered elsewhere the 185th Aero Squadron with its machines having the 160hp Gnome motors. The standard fuel consumption for a 160hp Gnome was twice that of other lower horsepower rotaries. Yet to keep things simple for engine change outs the main and reserve fuel tanks were the same in volume for all F. 1 type airframes. This limited the 160hp Gnome powered “Camel” to about 105 minutes on the main and roughly 15 minutes on the reserve.

The Roden Nieuport 28 has the engine your looking for. Also Linden Hill has a splendid resin aftermarket Gnome Monosuopape 160hp rotary in 1/48. The vent location was the key to the visual difference between the Gnome and the LeRhône.

They started adding more detail with the Nieuport 17 #8023 set. They are only 9.95 USD each - today.

another option

Or you might want to look at the products by "Engine and Things". They make a whole slew of plastic engines. The 110hp LeRhone is about four and a half bucks. Details not bad but be advised that they are of a soft plastic and you might want to cut off the existing propshaft and use brass rod for a new one so that your prop does not sag six months after your build is finished.

www.greatmodels.com sells their whole line.

Salute,
Steve
