Aces Pets

Does anyone know what became of Max Immelmann and the Red Baron's pet dogs after the aces were killed? I assume they were sent to live with relatives?

Regards

While on the subject of Immelmann I have found a possible new picture of his crash (though I am sure someone on here has seen it before?)

Thumbs up Moritz

Hello von Fear!

Manfred von Richthofen's dog was a brindle colored Great Dane named Moritz. He was purchased in 1916 in Ostend from a Belgian for 5 marks. Moritz was Manfred's constant companion until his death in April 1918.

After his death, Lt. Alfred Gerstenberg adopted Moritz. Gerstenberg served in the cavalry with Manfred and later in the air service and they remained close friends throughout the war. Gerstenberg passed away January 1, 1959.

Hope this helps!

Very Best Regards,
FliegerJG1

Moritz

Hi,

Richthofen's dog, Moritz, was given to his comrade Alfred Gerstenberg.

Immelmann's dog Tyrus stayed in the family and is also featured in a relatively famous post-war Sanke type card. Tyrus is in sitting position and flanked my Immelmann's mother, brother, and sister.

I don't have access to mine at the moment but I'm sure that someone will post it.

VBR,

Holck

Rudolf Berthold also has his pet with him in this famous photo of him, does anyone know any background of that?

Has anyone seen a photo of Fonck's pet stork, Helen?
