Max Immelmann's first

On 1-8-'15, Max Immelmann is reported as claiming his first victory over a B.E.2c (# 2003). What was Immelmann flying at the time? . And, Do we know what his first E-111 victory was? Thanks again, TeeKay.

From The Sky Their Battlefield:

BE2c 2003 was lost on 14 July 1915, Lt H M Goode and 2nd Lt W M Crabbie of No 2 Squadron RFC both Pow.

Immelmann's victory on 1 August was over Lt W Reid (PoW), No 16 Squadron RFC, in BE2c 1662.

Lt William Reid was a pilot with No 2 Squadron RFC and his story is related in "Under the guns of German Aces" by Franks and Giblin (more or less accurately) and said by them to be flying BE2c 2003. Reid was in my Grandfather's flight in 2 Sqn but I don't recognise Goode and Crabbie as 2 Sqn more likely another Sqn.

Red face

Patrick

I somehow contrived to get the squadrons reversed - Goode and Crabbie were No 16 Squadron and as you correctly point out Lieutenant Reid was in No 2 Squadron.

What can I say? My original message was done on my wife's birthday, so most likely I wasn't paying attention

Thanks for that clarification which suggests that The Sky Their Battlefield has the story right - good. Unfortunately there are quite a few errors in print surrounding Reid that day including in "Under the guns of German Aces" (2 Sqn COs name is incorrect, one of the pilot's initials are wrong and the detail is a little out), I think "Airmen died in the Great War" (Hobson) mentions Reid POW from 4 Sqn with someone called Lascelles KIA that day, another book speculates as to what happened to Reid's observer (in reality he didn't have one that day). I guess this is inevitable as people get down to this level of detail.

Lt. W. Reid

APW and all, So we have the following: Max Immelmann shot down a B.E.2c # 2003, piloted by Lt. W. Reid of 2nd squadron, no observer, and taken prisoner. Immelmann was flying a Fokker E-1 on 8-1-1915, and was credited with this, (his first) victory......Awsom, TeeKay

Hopefully this will attach a photo of I in an E1. The story can be found in "The Eagle of Lille" by his brother Franz.

John Frederick Lascelles was definitely in No 4 Squadron RFC - he had transferred from the Rifle Brigade and on 17 April 1915 had become the first RFC Observer to achieve a victory using a rifle, a feat for which he received the Military Cross (Gazetted on 23 June 1915). He was killed in action on 31 July 1915.
