I'm confused. There have been a number of models and profiles of Holtzem's Pfalz DIIIa and they all take different approaches to the wing and marking finishes:

Graham Hunter used four colour lozenge on the wings of his version, with no star or arc marking on the top wing. http://features02.kitparade.com/pfalzdiiigh_1.htm

Bob Pearson's profile pics at the Internet Modeller site show silber-grau wings with star marking but no arc marking on the top wing. For his build of the 1/72 Mac kit (Internet Modeller again) Michael Kendix used the same scheme.

In another build article of the Mac kit in the July 2001 issue of SAMI, Simon Snape went with silber-grau on the upper wing, with star and arc, and four colour lozenge on the upper surface of the lower wing. All struts and undercarriage legs were shown as varnished wood.

What is the correct scheme? ???
Cheers
James

I think that the Pearson version is probably the most accurate, compared to the photographs I have seen. However, I am not convinced that the wings weren't lozenge.

My Gallery
Jamo:
* *I made a study the photographs of Vzfw. max Holtzem's Pfal. D.IIIa in January 1980 and *have reviewed that data available, my take on the markings of Max Holtzem's Pfalz D.IIIa are:
The aircraft was painted all-over, wings, struts, fuselage and wheel covers with aluminum paint with a black rear fuselage, empennage and black bands on the fuselage super-imposed with a black and white comet on both sides of the fuselage. the pointed ends of the cabane and interplane struts indicate that this machine was from production order D.8052-8339/17.
The exhaust manifold was removed and short 300 mm long individual exhaust stacks were used. cat. No. Js16-39.
The cabane and interplane struts were always painted aluminum, they were never left as natural wood. For your own benefit check all the photographs in the "PFALZ D.IIIA" DATAFILE 21.
* *I am not convinced about the eight pointed on the left top wing. *The qualities of the photos are rather poor.
