In studying
Paul Bäumer's Dr.I 204/17, I have come across
a detail not shown on most reconstructions. In looking at a
photo of Baumer standing in front of his Dr.I with "Wilhelm", the
squadron telephone NCO, the wing underside has a dark stripe
from the leading edge back about 1/10 the chord. It looks to be
on the middle wing as well, and could have been on the bottom wing. The only other time I've seen this was on that Jasta 5 Dr.I
that
Fritz Rumey pranged. Yet in another photo of Baumer in
the cockpit of 204/17, no such stripe is seen. Obviously his
Triplane was a work in progress, considering how much painting he
had on it.
These photos can both be found in Paul Leaman's book
The Fokker
Triplane on page 165. The photo I've attached came from a posting last year, which probably spoke of just this topic, but which I neglected to search out before posting!
