Color of Spad Fittings

Hi,
I visited the Air Force Museum last weekend during the GWAA event and was happy to see Cole Palen's former Spad XIII on exhibit, completely restored in Eddie Rickenbacker's colors. I took a number of photographs while there, and while viewing them at home I noticed that all of the metal fittings were painted an odd shade of baby blue. Does anyone know why this color was used, or what other aircraft types used this color for metal fittings in production?

I think it's gel to keep the fittings from rusting.

Not really an answer to the question you asked SLDIII, but I see the S.XIII at Musee de l'Air also has blue fittings:

The restored S.XIII at NASM doesn't appear to:

Wonder if this feature was unique to one of the subcontractors who built the SPADs, or certain production batches??

The French planes seem to have all their fittings painted in a blue color. Look at the detail pictures of the SPAD and Moraine on this site http://memorial.flight.free.fr/indexuk.html , although their color is more of a grayish blue.

I've always thought that it must be a common color for steel fittings on French aircraft, maybe a primer of some kind? Look at the Demoiselle at the Musee de l'Air:

The Caudron G.III at La Ferte Alais:

(also the one at the Musee I think)

and others
