Question Unidentified Plane

I have my great grandfather's WWI photos. One of the pictures show a bi-wing plane nose down in the ground. This photo has a double exposure, luckily this doesn't mess up the beauty of the photo. The other picture shows the soldiers flipping the plane on its top. The plane is #5. I like to know what plane this was and what country it was from and possibly where this picture was taken. My great grandfather indicated the picture was taken in Germany (once they advanced into Germany after the war).

Your files were well over the 50K limit for attachments, but I didn't want to shrink them down or lose quality so I just popped 'em into my PhotoBucket and linked them in your original post.

The plane is a Salmson 2A2. It's in American markings, but I can't tell you what unit it's with.

Thanks for sharing the pictures!

Thumbs up Unidentified Plane

Thank you for posting the pictures. I can save this in thumbnail size if this helps. Knowing the type of plane and country helps answers some of the mystery. The back of the photo list the place and country this photo was taken. Unfortunatly, I can not read the town, only that it states Germany.

Is there a way to find out any information on plane #5 (pilot, division, where crashed etc)?

My Gallery
FWIW - The 88th Aero was with the Army of Occupation and flew Salmsons... Here's one of them.

If this turnso out to be an 88th Aero plane, you might be interested to know Major Harry B. Anderson from Dover, New Jersey was the CO of the 88th early in their time in France. He later moved on to command the IVth Corps Observation Group. Unfortunately, he was killed when he crashed a D.VII in 1919.

This won't do

JCK31,

We're glad to have you aboard

but

I can't have you stealing and abusing my avatar like that. There's only one bloke 'round here allowed to get away with that sort of thing. Besides, I worked too hard stealing it from Rosebud's and abusing the noble beast myself.

Try this one:

Its not stealing Eric, its sharing. Besides... you did all the work to make it. Good job btw. Your point is well taken.. its an intellectual property issue. ahhh... So many good crash photos... so few avatar opportunities to use them.

Thanks for sharing your Salmson JCK31.

No worries - I took it as a compliment.

And if your Number Five had been a Camel I might even had let it slide . . . . but we have certain standards to uphold, you know.

Although Barker will tell you different - he's still a little put out that I glorified the machine's misfortune in the first place.
