Morane-Saulnier Photos and Info Needed

Hello all -

Kicking an almost-dead horse here, but we're still trying to figure out some apparant oddities of the surviving MoS AIs. I wonder if anyone has or knows where I could find the following:
  • Photos or further information on the machines tested at McCook Field. I have P-numbers for only two (170 and 196) - is this correct or were there more?
  • A top-view drawing or photo of the MoS 23 / Type AC that shows the shape of the wing.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Eric, The 3-view in the FMP book is pretty much identicle To JMB's. There are a couple of good photo's but nothing showing the top of the wing.

Eric, good morning. As far as I can tell from a list of AAS Serials I have, only two Morane-Saulniers were accessed by the US Army. I assume they were model A-1s. Air Service 64301 was McCook Field P170 and Air Service 64301 was McCook Field P196. I find no others on the list. Have you tried the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Base? They have in their collections all the McCook Field records, I believe. Doc

That matches what I have, Doc. One of them went to a museum in the '20s and the other was "shipped to Fairfield, Ohio." The latter interests because I happen to live in Fairfield - I'll be looking into that a little more.

Another question - the AEF purchased 51 AIs for use as trainers. When the war ended, did aircraft such as these that had been acquired by the US forces in Europe come back to America, or were they left there or sold off?

Eric,
You must be a young guy. Fairfield OH was the Air Corps depot which is now Patterson Field (or Area A WPAFB) and what has been called, "FAIRBORN" for the past 55(?) years

MoS 23 AC photo

Thought you might like to see these from the JMB book. I guess you don't have this book? It covers all the MS types pretty well. It talks about some in RFC service too.
